Knoxville Parks & Recreation has unveiled its Competine Trail extension, and it’s now available for public use. Director Brandon Nemmers says the options for its use are open to anything that isn’t motorized.
“Biking, walking, rollerblades, scooters, nothing electric or gas-powered, those types of things. People have been happy, we’ve been hearing good, positive comments, which is always nice. It makes the whole process worth it. We hope to continue planning for another extension. This extension took 16 years, from the first time it was put down in 2005. Let’s hope there’s not another 16-year gap for the next mile. We’re proud of it, and we appreciate everyone who had a hand in it.”
The trail is now two miles long, beginning at the Randy Wilson Track and ending at 5th Street. The project included construction of a safe crossing of Highway 14, and paving along Competine Creek. A ribbon cutting to commemorate the opening of the extension will take place where the trail extension started on the Knoxville Hospital & Clinics grounds. It begins at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 8th, and is open to the public.
