The Simpson football team fell behind early and couldn’t recover against the Pointers of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon 34-7 in their home opener heard live on 94.3 KNIA. The Storm fell behind early on a 62-yard fake punt touchdown by the Pointers on the first drive of the game, and ended up giving up 27 unanswered in the first half before eventually getting a score across the line on a Seth Howard to Austin Bell 27-yard connection at the end of the second quarter. The second half featured long drives that stalled out near the red zone by both squads, and featured only one fourth quarter touchdown by the Pointers. Storm head coach Matt Jeter tells KNIA Sports the Storm’s inability to gain yards on the ground was a huge part of the lack of offense.

“The name of the game is running the football for me. We ran for 19 yards when you include the sacks, and they ran for over 300. You aren’t winning many games doing that. You aren’t winning many games giving up that much on the ground, and you aren’t winning any games when you only rush for 19 yards. That’s just football.”

The Storm fall to 0-2 on the season, and begin conference play on the road next Saturday at Coe College.
