The Indianola YMCA held a commemoration event Saturday for the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, honoring local first responders and those who lost their lives. The event included a moment of silence, the singing of the national anthem, a flag raising ceremony by local boy scouts, and the playing of Taps at the time of each of the attacks on 9/11. Indianola Fire Department Firefighter Bob Soukup tells KNIA News the anniversary of 9/11 is always an emotional day for first responders, and he was happy to see the community come out in support of their work.

“I can relate, I can feel what those guys and those women must have felt that morning. I’ve often thought, having climbed stairs in buildings, and being in stairwells, what it must have sounded like when those buildings came down, and when they realized they had no place to run. They were doing what they wanted to do, what they loved to do, and then they realized that they were stuck. We can feel that. We can relate to that feeling.”

Kids activities were provided by the Indianola YMCA, the Hartford Fire Department, and the Indianola Fire Department. To learn more, tune in to today’s Let’s Talk Indianola.
