Several Simpson Storm fall athletics squads were in action over the weekend.
Simpson College women’s soccer played to its first draw this fall in a 1-1 match at Wisconsin-Platteville on Saturday. Freshman Jordyn Foelske tallied her second goal of the season in the 34th minute to put the Storm on the board. The Storm are now 2-1-1, and travel to Grinnell this Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. match.
The Simpson College women’s tennis team survived on its home courts to claim a 5-4 win over Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday.Emily King, Megan Grubb, and Donni Kinghorn won in singles play, while the duos of Anna Wanek and King, and Bella Tranquilino and Kennedi Wright won in doubles to secure the win. The Storm are now 2-1 on the season, and travel to Central for a match on Saturday.
The Simpson College cross country teams competed in the 59th running of the Les Duke Invitational on Saturday, hosted by Grinnell College. The men ended second and the women carded fifth. The Storm men got top 10 finishes from Spencer Moon, Andrew Klein, and Harry Dudley in 5th, 8th, and 9th respectively, while the women were paced by Cat Lucht in 16th. Both squads are off for the rest of the month and return to competition in the Brissman-Lundeen Invitational on Oct. 1.
The Simpson College men’s and women’s golf teams wrapped up the two-day Klocke Family Classic on Sunday, hosted by Mount Mercy University, the Storm women finished fifth, while the men opened their fall slate in 15th. Freshman Madeline Streicher posted a two-day sum of 171 to finish sixth with her second straight top-10 performance to lead the women, while Isaac Roe ended in a tie for 54th. Both squads are back in action tomorrow in the DMACC Invitational.
The Storm men’s soccer team fell to Cornell Monday night 2-1 in overtime. The Storm took a 1-0 lead in the first half off of a goal by Jordy Triana-Vazquez, but gave up a second half goal and another in the extra period to drop the contest. The Storm are now 2-3 on the season and next play Illinois College tomorrow.
