The Iowa DNR released its latest update regarding fall colors Monday afternoon. According to the release, drought may have a negative impact on the colors seen this year and how long they last. Professor of Biology at Central College Paul Weihe says a long-term drought, coupled with one of the warmest Septembers on record, will more than likely shorten the viewing season of the changing of the leaves. Weihe recommends locals take a stroll or drive around Lake Red Rock for the best viewing locally. The DNR Fall Colors report indicates yellows, reds, and purples are creeping in along forest and field edges, with dogwood being reddish-purple and ivy and sumac bright red. Bottomland areas are also showing some yellow in walnut, cottonwood, and declining ash. Peak viewing season for fall colors will likely be between Oct. 15-20 locally.
