After five weeks of being blown out, and dominated by the opponent, the Knoxville Football Squad rose up and controlled the game with Saydel and won for the first time this season 24-14 as heard live on 95.3 KNIA. Knoxville took control early on a 14 yard touchdown run by Hayden Jones in the first quarter, then another Jones run from a yard out, putting the Panthers up 14-0. Knoxville would add another score buy Mike Greubel early in the 2nd quarter before Saydel scored near the end of the 1st half to make it 21-8 at the halftime break. Saydel controlled the second half but never could get a big play to work and a John Buttell 24 yard field goal gave Knoxville enough cushion to take the win. Panthers Coach Eric Kellar told KNIA/KRLS Sports it was great to just get a win and see success finally come to his team.
Kellar: “Lot of genuinely little kid smiles, they’ve not been down or dejected in our huddles at the end of the games. They definitely made some mistakes, but we’re really proud of them and they fought to the end.”
Gavin Montalvo led the Panthers’ ground attack with 11 carries for 60 yards, T.J. DeJong had 45 yards on 15 carries. Noah Keefer was 3/7 for 39 yards, while Jay Kellar caught two passes 32 yards. Knoxville is now 1-5 on the season and evens its district six record to 1-1 with the longest road trip of the season to Atlantic on Friday.
