City of Knoxville officials will receive better compensation after a pair of resolutions were passed at Monday’s meeting. City Manager Heather Ussery says the new pay rates are more aligned with communities of comparable size.

“The mayor’s salary will be changing, he’s paid biweekly. His is changing from $2,400 to $5,000 a year. The council was previously being paid $12 a meeting, and that will be changing to $50 per meeting. In reviewing other communities, it’s still lower than a lot, but we’re making a big jump from where we were.”

This was the first change in the compensation package since 1984. The new rates will take effect in January.
