Under the direction of a new head coach, PCM’s girls basketball squad will look to adapt a defense-first mentality for 2021-22.
The Mustangs will be bringing back one starter, who is point guard Paige Steenhoek. Steenhoek was second on PCM in scoring last season, averaging six points per game while shooting 27% from three-point range. PCM is also expected to have Emily Foster vaulted into the starting lineup, replacing Riley Hjortshoj. With a team that is small, the Mustangs will look to bring a defensive mentality and scrappiness to the court in a tough Heart of Iowa Conference. Coach Sami Allison-Rodriguez tells KRLS Sports that she wants to use a ten-person rotation and full-court press.
“Defensively, we are going to get up in people’s faces. If we can get all ten of our players in our rotation I think we can probably do some full-court press for a lot of games if we can swing it.”
PCM opens the season Saturday at home against Chariton.
