The #2 in class 4A Indianola girls basketball team started off the season with a win for the first time in head coach Jeff Jansen’s tenure with a 58-32 win over longtime rival Urbandale Tuesday evening as heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Indians got out to a quick start, leading 18-3 in the first quarter with aggressive drives to the hoop and converting on free throw attempts, then after a cold stretch in the second quarter finished the half strong to lead 31-14 at the break. Senior Lauren Blake scored 12 points in the third quarter as the Indians expanded their lead to 44-24, then continued to dominate on the defensive end to pick up the win.
Senior Kinzey Johnston said after the game it was nice to start the season off with a win, and feels good to win by playing the way they wanted to play.
“It feels great. The past three years I’ve been here since as a freshman we’ve never won our first game, so this feels great as a senior you’re just out there kicking butt and it feels amazing.”
Blake led the Indians with 24 points, while Emily Naughton scored 13. The Indians are now 1-0 on the season, and host North Polk on Monday.
