The first doubleheader of the 2021-22 season for PCM’s basketball squads ended in a sweep against Class 1A powerhouse Montezuma Thursday night as the girls lost 59-45 while the boys lost 56-46.

The Mustangs’ girls fought valiantly against the No. 4 in Class 1A Bravettes, but it ultimately was not enough to overcome Montezuma’s shooting barrage. The scoring was a lot more balanced than the Mustangs, as freshman Addison Steenhoek led the way with 12 points. Maddie Reed was second on the team in scoring with eight, while Addison’s sister, Sophie, had seven. With the loss, PCM drops to 0-3 on the young season.

The Mustangs’ boys hung around the No. 24 in Class 1A Braves, but were unable to make a run to pull ahead. Montezuma used an 18-5 third quarter to pull away from PCM and come away with the victory. Despite the loss, Coach Fred Lorensen says that he is optimistic about the tall and fast duo of Matt Rosonke and Durant Van Dyke.

“Our big kids can really run. Durant and Matt can just fly and they’re really good jumpers as well and we think that they are really going to be a fun group to play with.”

PCM will be right back on the court tonight for their first Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader against Nevada. The doubleheader begins with the girls’ game tipping off at 6:00 PM. The doubleheader will be broadcast on the KRLS3 stream at kniakrls.com, with pregame starting at 5:45 PM. Alex Koch will be on the call.
