The first Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader ended in a sweep for PCM’s basketball squads against Nevada as broadcast on the KRLS3 stream at kniakrls.com, while the wrestling squad will have their first major tournament of the season at Dallas Center-Grimes.

The Mustangs’ girls’ basketball squad were run off the court by the Cubs, 58-20. PCM struggled to get any offense going, mustering just six points in the first half and put forth their lowest scoring total of the young season. Emily Foster and Paige Steenhoek led the team in scoring with six points apiece. PCM drops to 0-4 on the season.

The Mustangs’ boys’ basketball squad were shot out of the gym by the Cubs, 82-56. Nevada caught fire from behind the arc, knocking down 15 three-pointers, including six in the fourth quarter. PCM’s top scorer was Carson Vandelune, who knocked in a season-high 24 points, including three from downtown. Coach Fred Lorensen tells KRLS Sports that it boiled down to the Cubs’ sharpshooting as the difference in the game.

“Nevada’s got a bunch of really good shooters. They made a bunch of threes and I was really impressed with our kids. We got down early and they just kept hanging around. Early in the fourth quarter we made a three to cut it down to seven and it looked like it may get kind of interesting. They then went on another barrage and made a bunch of threes in a row and it went from seven to 20 real quickly. By then, there wasn’t enough time left.”

With the loss, PCM drops to 1-2 on the season. Both basketball squads will be back in action Monday for another doubleheader as they square off with Pella Christian. That doubleheader will be broadcast on 92.1 KRLS.

The Mustangs’ wrestling squad will compete in their first major tournament today. PCM is coming off going 1-2 in their first quadrangular of the season at Van Meter Tuesday, losing to Heart of Iowa Conference foe Greene County and Ogden. In the Dallas Center-Grimes Mustang Invitational, PCM will go up against three Heart of Iowa Conference opponents, who are Greene County, Nevada, and West Marshall. The Mustangs will also compete with 11 other teams including Urbandale, Lewis Central, and ADM.

The wrestling meet at Dallas Center-Grimes gets underway at 9:00 AM.
