The Simpson Storm women’s and men’s basketball teams swept Coe Saturday afternoon on the road in American Rivers Conference play, the #14 Storm women winning 91-71 and the Storm men 74-64 as heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Storm women put on a layup line in the first half, putting up 34 points in the first quarter and another 20 in the second to lead big at halftime 54-31. The Kohawks played even throughout the second half, but the Storm lead was far too much to come back from. Jenna Taylor led the team with 22 points, one of four Storm players in double figures.
The Storm men put the clamps on defensively over the high-scoring Kohawks, leading for the majority of the contest. The Storm jumped out to a 24-14 lead, then survived a 16-2 Kohawk run late in the first half to come back and lead 40-35 at the break. The Storm kept up the defensive effort, holding Coe to just 29 second half points and answered every push from the Kohawks. Assistant coach Brandon Stromer said after the game, this Simpson team has the potential to be one of the strongest defensive teams in the conference and they showed it on Saturday. Andrew Curran led the team with 26 points, while Chris Honz had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Storm women are now 6-1 overall and 2-0 in ARC play, while the Storm men are 4-3 and 1-1. Both teams will match up next in conference play on Saturday hosting Wartburg.
