A pair of runs to open each half gave Pella’s girls plenty of room in a 66-18 win over Washington, while the No. 2 in 3A boys were stunned at home by the Demons in the home opening doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS Tuesday.

The opener featured a 16-0 start to regulation and a 14-0 stretch to begin the 2nd half driven by several forced turnovers by Pella pressure. After a sluggish start offensively, Senior Reagan Van Wyk finally got her scoring going, including an incredible stretch of four-consecutive three-pointers as the Dutch pushed the game to a running clock in the 3rd quarter against the Demons.

Van Wyk was relieved to get her game going and to contribute to an offense she feels can be better than seen last week against North Polk and Indianola.

Reagan finished with 18 points, followed by 12 from Anna Childerston — all coming from three-point range on a night with 16 Pella steals.

The Pella boys got off to the right start against Washington, opening with a 12-3 run and stretching another lead to nine points early. But an uneven offensive shooting performance and several defense lapses leading to open shots for a white-hot Demons team put the home team behind just before the half and for the majority of the final two quarters. The Dutch climbed from a seven-point third quarter deficit multiple times and took a lead by four around the halfway mark in the 4th, but several missed rebounds and extra chances for Washington allowed the road team to pull away and find the stunning win.

Ethan Patterson of Washington scored 31 and teammate Kasen Bailey dropped 16 in the 2nd half as part of the upset; Pella’s Noah Allen led the Dutch with 19 points, and Karl Miller and Keegan Hansen each tallied 15 offensively.

Pella’s girls improve to 2-2 overall, while the boys fall to 2-1 overall and both hit the road to Norwalk for conference play Friday (live on 92.1 KRLS).
