The Knoxville American Legion is accepting donations to its flag fund. These dollars will be used to purchase flags and poles for the twice-annual parade of flags at Graceland Cemetery for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. American Legion member Curt Froyen says this tradition helps to remind people of the importance of honoring the sacrifices of veterans.
“There are 1,200 veterans buried in Graceland Cemetery. When we get out there and place 250 flags around every pathway throughout the cemetery, it’s a way for us to honor the sacrifices of the men and women who served this country. One of the things I love about those days is to see the young boys and girls with their parents or grandparents who come on those mornings and put the flags up. Donating to this fund is a great way to preserve the memory of the sacrifices of veterans, but also to teach our young people the importance of honoring their service.”
Each flag costs $50, but Froyen says donations of any size are appreciated. Donations can be dropped off at or mailed to the Knoxville American Legion.
