Pella brought a pair of basketball victories back from Fairfield last night, with the Dutch girls winning 56-51 and the boys snapping a two-game losing streak with a 92-72 triumph in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Pella girls didn’t take their first lead until 31-30 midway through the third quarter, but they never trailed after that and hit 14-of-17 fourth quarter free throws to earn their second straight late game victory.  Anna Vander Waal poured in a team high 18 points and Hailey Van Vark added nine points and eight rebounds off the bench as the Dutch improve to 4-2 on the season.

In the boys game, it was a wire-to-wire Pella victory, as the Dutch exploded for a 30-point first quarter and led by double digits for most of the game.  After dropping both of their games last week, coach Derek Schulte says that his guys came out and played with a sense of urgency last night.

“We got back to playing Pella basketball, which is at a high pace.  I love the way we shared the basketball, as we ended up with 20 assists and only six turnovers, which is a huge stat for us.  And we found the right guys at the right time.  Early on that was Karl Miller, and we kept feeding him.”

Miller nailed five-of-five first quarter three pointers, scored 20 in the first half and finished with 25 for the game.  Parker Elder added 18 points and nine assists, Preston Rowe and Luke Hardman each scored 12 and Noah Allen chipped in 11.  The Pella boys are now 3-2 on the season.

Up next for both Dutch squads is a home doubleheader with Newton on Friday night.
