The Indianola wrestling team makes their annual road trip to compete at the Young Arena in Waterloo for the Battle of Waterloo tournament today and tomorrow, while the girls and boys basketball squads have their first road Little Hawkeye Conference games at Dallas Center-Grimes.
The Indians grapplers have had a fantastic start to the season, winning duals against conference opponents Newton and Dallas Center-Grimes, as well as winning the Newton Tournament and placing third at the crowded Johnston Invite last weekend. The tournament will conclude on Saturday.
The #4 Indians girls basketball team is looking to stay undefeated in conference play, having dispatched Pella and Pella Christian, and are now trying to unseat the reigning conference champions in the #8 Mustangs. Head coach Jeff Janssen tells KNIA Sports he knows that the Indians will have to bring their best to stay at the top of the conference.
“It’s going to be a playoff atmosphere, two top-10 teams. And if we want to get where we want to get after new year’s and heading into February in a month and a half, Friday night is just as big a game as if it was the second round of playoffs to get to state.”
The Indians boys also are trying to unseat one of the two remaining undefeated teams in the conference standings along with Newton, and are in a logjam tie for third place in the standings. The games tonight can be heard live on the KNIA3 stream on KNIAKRLS.com, with Andrew Swadner and Rick Wilson on the play-by-play. Pregame coverage begins at 6pm, with tip-off scheduled for 6:15.
