PCM’s basketball squads came away with a split in their doubleheader with West Marshall Friday night, while the PCM wrestling squad finished Day One of the Fort Madison Invitational tied for 15th.

The Mustangs’ boys’ basketball squad had their game extended, but ultimately came out on top in a 60-51 overtime victory over the Trojans. PCM and West Marshall were tied at 42 going into overtime, then the Mustangs’ offense exploded with 18 points in the overtime period, in spite of guard Carson Vandelune fouling out. The win puts PCM at 4-5 on the season and 3-3 in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

The Mustangs’ girls’ basketball squad couldn’t stop No. 9 in Class 3A West Marshall’s scoring attack, losing 56-35. The loss drops PCM to 3-7 on the season and 1-2 in Heart of Iowa Conference play. Evelyn Burkett stepped into the starting lineup and led the way in scoring with ten points. The biggest difference in the game was the second quarter when the Mustangs were outscored 16-2, as stated by PCM Head Coach Sami Allison-Rodriguez.

“We came out really great in the first quarter. I was really proud. We stuck to the gameplan and we hit some shots. Unfortunately we had a really off second quarter. We just let them score a lot. We weren’t boxing out real well. They got some easy putbacks and I think our confidence got down. Outside of the second quarter, I was really proud of the effort.”

PCM’s boys squad will be back in action Monday night for a non-conference showdown with East Marshall, while the girls will be back in action Tuesday night as part of a boys/girls doubleheader with Roland-Story.

The Mustangs’ wrestling squad finished Day One of the Fort Madison Invitational Friday night tied for 15th with Keokuk. PCM is currently ahead of Louisa-Muscatine, Highland Riverside, Van Buren County, and Mackinaw. Two wrestlers tied for the highest finish in Day One as Nate Richards at 170 pounds and Wyatt Wheeler at 195 pounds finished tied for eighth in their respective weight classes.

The wrestling tournament at Fort Madison will resume today at 10:00 AM.
