The Red Rock Rivalry was lopsided for the north-siders as Pella’s varsity basketball teams combined to beat Knoxville by 100 points, with a 70-21 Dutch girls win and an 81-30 boys victory heard live on 92.1 KRLS Tuesday night.
Both games featured strong Pella defense generating offense and strong 2nd quarters for the home team to build a significant advantage that led to a pair of continuous clock mercy rule-contests.
The No. 14 Pella girls stole 18 Knoxville possessions in the opener, and Anna Childerston and Kylie Tauke each scored 11 points to lead the team. Childerston is excited with the progress the team has made after one-third of the season, and how their defense is becoming a more consistent presence.
A similar story unfolded in the nightcap, as the Panthers kept it close early before the transition game of the No. 7 in 3A Dutch became too much to handle in a hurry.
Carson Uitermarkt told KNIA/KRLS Sports he felt like they did a good job in the opening minutes of the game of keeping up with Pella, but the pressure defense was too much to contain.
“We knew coming in that it was going to be really tough, and I think we impressed everyone in the first minutes, but then they got the break away layups and dunks and hustle plays that we didn’t get.”
Pella had four in double figures, including 16 points from Noah Allen, 12 apiece from Karl Miller and Parker Elder, and 11 from Keegan Hansen. Knoxville was led by nine points from Gabe Clark.
The Dutch girls improve to 6-2 and boys are 5-2, while the Panthers girls are now 3-4 and the boys are 1-4, and all teams are off until January for the holidays.
