Both of PCM’s basketball squads ended the 2021 calendar year with a sweep at the hands of Heart of Iowa Conference power Roland-Story Tuesday night.
The Mustangs’ girls struggled to put up points throughout the night, losing 61-23 to the No. 11 in Class 3A Norsemen. PCM had the score at 18-12 against Roland-Story before the Norsemen went on a 43-11 run to seal the deal. Riley Johannes led the Mustangs in scoring with six points while Sophie Steenhoek had four. With the loss PCM will head into the Holiday break with a 3-8 overall record and a 1-2 record in Heart of Iowa Conference play.
The Mustangs’ boys failed to match No. 9 in Class 3A Roland-Story’s offensive firepower in the second half, losing 77-54. PCM matched the Norsemen blow for blow in the first half, trailing by just six at halftime. The Mustangs were then outscored 28-11 in the third quarter and were unable to recover from the deficit. Carson Vandelune and Durant Van Dyke tied for the lead in scoring for PCM with 16 apiece. PCM will go into the break with a 5-6 overall record and a 3-3 Heart of Iowa Conference record.
The Mustangs’ boys will be back in action January 3, 2022 for a non-conference showdown at Earlham, while the girls will be back January 7 for part one of a Heart of Iowa girls/boys doubleheader at South Hamilton.
