The first measurable snow of the year fell across most of south central Iowa Wednesday afternoon and evening. Many residents received 1-3″ of snow, including 2.5″ in Pella and 1.5″ at the KNIA/KRLS Studios in Knoxville, causing some travel headaches during the evening commute.

A much more significant winter storm appears to be forming on the horizon to kick off the new year, as the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for most of Iowa along and south of Highway 30 for Saturday and Sunday. Initial forecasts indicate widespread snowfall amounts of 3-6″ locally, and sustained winds near 20 MPH and gusts closer to 30 will significantly reduce visibility and cause drifting concerns Saturday afternoon and evening.

Behind the snow system is the first round of arctic air of the winter season, which will make clearing roads challenging as well, with wind chills dipping well below zero Saturday night through Sunday morning.
