Demolition continues at the former VA campus in Knoxville. Marion County Facilities and Maintenance Director Chris Nesteby says four structures remain, and that the goal is to have no standing buildings by March. He says that as demolition crews get closer to residential areas, they are doing their best to control dust, but reminds everyone that it is not harmful.

“We’re doing our best to ensure that when the wind shifts, we’re either moving equipment to the other side, or to stop taking a building down. It may be structurally weak enough that it will fall down by itself. We just ask for a little extra patience as we get closer to residential areas. We understand that dust is a concern. The most important thing to grasp is that the buildings have been completely abated of hazardous materials and asbestos. You may get some dust, and it’s no more harmful than if you sweep out your garage.”
