The Central men’s basketball team struggled to make shots down the stretch as they dropped a tough game against Luther College 61-53, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Dutch matched the Norse through the first half as each team made 11 field goals while ending the half tied at 28 on the scoreboard. The two teams would continue to trade blows for most of the second half, but a five minute and 36 second scoreless drought for Central would allow the Norse to pull away for the eight-point win. Senior guard Kade Terrell led the Dutch with 13 points and junior forward Sam Beatty had some success attacking the rim and added 12.

With the loss Central fell to 3-12 overall on the year and 0-7 in American Rivers Conference Play. The Dutch will return to action on Wednesday when they head to Indianola to take on Simpson.

The Central College track and field teams hosted the Dutch Athletics Classic on Saturday. The Dutch men’s track and field team came away with a first-place finish in the meet, while the Central women’s team finished second.

In the men’s meet, Central had five individual winners and a victory for the lone relay provided to tally 188 points, giving the Dutch a 77-point advantage over second-place Buena Vista University in the six-team field. Thomas Spoehr won the shot put with a distance that moved him up to 26th nationally. Joe Stein and JD Elefson finished first and second respectively in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. Elefson then anchored the Central first place 4×400-meter relay team with Nolan Renyolds, Grant Boyse, and Carter Tryon completing the other legs of the race. The Dutch also had the top three finishers in the 3,000-meter run, as Noah Jorgensen won the race with Adam Sylvia finishing second and Caleb Silver coming in third.

High jumper Taryn Hintz and thrower Abby Marr set impressive new personal-best marks Saturday for the Central women’s track and field team leading to a second-place finish as Buena Vista University edged the Dutch in points 162 to 160. In her first open high jump competition, Hintz cleared the bar at five feet, 3.75 inches to take home the title, moving into the No. 10 spot on the school record board and earning a spot in the top-15 of Division III this season. Marr added nearly three feet to her career-best weight throw, tossing the fourth-best mark in school history of 54 feet, 9.25 inches and ranks sixth nationally in the event. She finished second in that event and was third in the shot put.

The Dutch next compete at the Prairie Wolf Invitational next Friday in Lincoln, Nebraska, with the meet starting at 1 p.m.
