A bill is being put into place and considered in the US House of Representatives to help stop surprise healthcare billing, which affects even those with insurance. Congresswoman Cindy Axne tells KNIA News she has been pushing for this bill for years now, and a version is being considered that includes language to stop surprise billing for air ambulance/helicopter trips.
“Unfortunately in Iowa, usually in rural Iowa, that is your only form of transportation and it can be life or death. And something that hits close to home, I heard from a woman in Indianola who shared a story with me from last year. Her daughter was in a car accident, and needed to be transported to Des Moines because of the injuries and she was charged $42,000 for the trip even though the hospital was in network, because they contract with the air ambulance separately which is in its own network. Who the heck knows stuff like that, it’s just crazy.”
