Pella’s girls rolled to a 56-21 win over Des Moines Christian last night, while the Lion boys knocked off Pella for the second straight year, 53-47, in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
It was a wire-to-wire blowout for the class 4A #13 Dutch girls, who jumped out to a 15-2 first quarter lead. Kennedy Van Vark scored 12 of her game high 20 points in the first half as Pella took a 25-10 advantage into halftime. Many of those were second chance points, as the sophomore credited junior post Mia Warner for crashing the offensive glass.
“I don’t know how many she had, but a lot of credit to her because she had tons of offensive rebounds. We had 10 at the half and they only had two. We did really well rebounding tonight”, said Van Vark afterwards.
Warner finished with eight offensive boards and 10 rebounds total for the game. Kylie Tauke joined Van Vark in double figures with 12 points as the Dutch improve to 9-4 overall.
Pella’s boys saw their eight game winning streak snapped in a back-and-forth affair. It was a low-scoring slugfest that the Dutch led 31-30 going into the fourth quarter. Class 2A #5 Des Moines Christian edged ahead, then made 15-of-16 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory over the class 3A #4 Dutch. Noah Allen scored 17 points and Karl Miller grabbed a team high 11 rebounds and blocked four shots. Pella falls to 10-3.
Both Dutch squads are back in action on Friday as they host Indianola to start the second round-robin in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
