Defensive pressure by Lamoni got the best of the Twin Cedars Girls Basketball Squad on Saturday in the Bluegrass Conference Tournament Championship game as the Demons defeated the Sabers 55-41 at Ankeny Christian. Twin Cedars jumped out to an 18-12 first quarter lead but was only able to 23 points the rest of the way due to Lamoni’s pressure defense in the half court. Coach Zack Dunkin told KNIA/KRLS Sports the half court defense coupled with his team being unable to get into an offense made things difficult.
Dunkin: “I didn’t think the press hurt us that much, maybe a couple of times at first, then we adjusted. Their pressure in the half court caused us to turn the ball over too many times and gave them easy baskets at the other end.”
Brooke Roby scored 20 points to lead the Sabers, and in doing so made Twin Cedars Basketball History by joining the 1,000 career point club. Roby told KNIA/KRLS Sports she credits her family and coaches for helping her achieve a lofty accomplishment.
Roby: “I really worked hard for that and it paid off. My teammates and family were really supportive and it was a really nice accomplishment to follow my siblings.”
Roby joins a rather exclusive club at Twin Cedars including her sister Brittany and brother Otis, who both topped the 1,000 career point mark at Twin Cedars. The Sabers are now 12-6 and will travel to HLV on Monday.
