PCM’s basketball squads came up empty in their final road doubleheader of the season as they were swept by Roland-Story, a doubleheader that was broadcast on the KRLS3 stream at kniakrls.com.

The shorthanded Mustangs’ girls fought valiantly but ran out of energy in the fourth, losing 62-34 to the No. 7 in Class 3A Norse. PCM kept it within eight at halftime and ten after three, but were outscored in the fourth quarter 20-2. The Mustangs operated without Sophia Steenhoek and Emily Foster due to injuries. Addison Steenhoek led the way for PCM, scoring 16 points. Addison’s sister, Paige, was second on the team in scoring with 12. With the loss, PCM drops to 6-15 on the season and 5-8 in Heart of Iowa Conference play. Coach Sami Allison-Rodriguez tells KRLS Sports that despite the loss, she was very proud of the way her team battled.

“We only dressed six tonight and the JV dressed up for us, but we brought six varsity and I was super proud the first three quarters, and then in the fourth quarter we just ran out of gas. But, I told the kids I’m more proud tonight of them battling than some of the wins we had this season.”

The Mustangs’ boys were overwhelmed early and often by the No. 10 in Class 2A Norsemen, losing 73-57. PCM got out to a rough start, trailing 20-5 after one quarter and never being able to regain any momentum. The Mustangs trailed by as little as nine in the second quarter, but a barrage of three-pointers from Roland-Story opened the floodgates. Durant Van Dyke led the team in scoring, knocking in 26 points. The 26 points from Van Dyke is two off his season and career-high. Carson Vandelune had a rough night offensively, scoring just ten points. With the loss, PCM drops 11-8 overall and 8-4 in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

Both teams will be back in action for their final doubleheader of the season Tuesday night against South Hamilton.
