An education bill is making its way through the Iowa Senate, deemed the Parental Bill of Rights. State Senator Julian Garrett tells KNIA News the bill will define that parents have a right to know what the child is being taught including access to all materials, access to information on who is teaching the child, access to the child and records while in school, safety information, and schools should not include any activity involving obscene material or allow the child any access to obscenity without consent from the parent or guardian.
Senator Garrett tells KNIA News he agrees with many of the goals of the bill, even if it is not in the final version yet.
“Just the general idea of opening things up and giving parents a right to know what is going on as far as their child’s education, I’m certainly in favor of that. Whether there can be some improvements on the bill or not I’m not at the point of having an opinion on that yet, I just got into looking at the initial version of the bill. General idea I’m fine with, but I sure wouldn’t want to say that we would not be able to improve it.”
