Round two of the Tulip City Showdown finished with a green and white sweep on Eagle Lane and over the 2021-22 season, as Pella’s girls defeated Pella Christian 55-42, while the #5 in 3A Dutch boys held off a late charge from #6 in 2A Pella Christian 56-50, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS Thursday.

The regular season finale between the girls teams stayed close for the majority of the contest, but a 14-2 run to end the 2nd half for Pella was the difference. The Eagles played perhaps their most complete game of the season to keep pace with the Dutch, but the road team was able to keep the contest above an 11-point margin for the final two quarters. While turnovers were essentially even between the teams, it was rebounding that was the edge for Pella on a 33-21 margin.

Pella Christian’s Joslyn Terpstra led all scorers with 16 points, followed by Pella’s Anna Vander Waal at 12. Faith Kacmarynski added a 10 point, eight steal performance, while Anna Childerston hit four 1st half three-pointers to help the Dutch create their first-half margin.

It was Pella getting the early jump on Pella Christian in the boys’ nightcap, at one point leading by five, before the Eagles hit a 20-7 surge fueled by four Levi Schelhaas three pointers in the 2nd quarter. The pivotal minutes came after that run, as the Dutch pushed the game to a halftime tie before roaring out of the gates in the 2nd half, capping what ultimately became a 23-7 run from the 2nd to 3rd quarters.

The Eagles caught fire again from outside as Schelhaas and Jaedon Huisman spurred a late charge for Pella Christian to nearly erase what became an 11-point green-and-white advantage, but P.C. missed several chances in the 4th to push the game to a tie, and Pella’s Noah Allen hit four consecutive late free throws to put the game away.

Schelhaas finished with 17 points, Huisman added 12, and Eric Mulder capped an 11-point, 12 rebound double-double for Pella Christian. The Dutch were paced by 15 from Allen, 13 points from Keegan Hansen, and nine points, five rebounds, and three steals for Karl Miller.

The Pella girls finish the regular season at 12-9 overall and 7-7 in the Little Hawkeye Conference, while the Eagles girls are 3-18 and 1-13 heading into the postseason this Saturday at Pekin. The Dutch will host Waterloo East next Wednesday.

Pella’s boys still have one regular season game left Tuesday vs. Mt Pleasant with their 14-6 overall record and 10-4 showing in the Little Hawkeye, while the Eagles finish the regular season at 15-6 and 9-5 against league foes and await the winner of Central Decatur and Davis County Thursday at home in the 2A district playoffs.
