PCM’s girls’ basketball squad had their season come to an end at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Saturday night, while the boys will begin playoff action Monday night against Chariton.
The Mustangs’ girls trailed wire-to-wire to the Rockets and were one-and-done in the postseason, losing 67-25. PCM had little answer for EBF’s quick offense and suffocating press defense. Paige Steenhoek led the way in scoring for the Mustangs, scoring nine points with all of them coming in the first half. Addison Steenhoek finished second on the team in scoring with six. PCM will graduate one senior, Emily Foster, who missed the final four games of the season with a concussion.
The 2021-22 PCM Mustangs finish the regular season with a 6-17 overall record and a 5-9 in Heart of Iowa Conference play.
The Mustangs’ boys will begin playoff action Monday night against the Chariton Chargers. PCM finished the regular season with a 12-9 record and a 9-5 record in Heart of Iowa Conference play. In the second half of the season, PCM is 7-3 since the calendar turned to 2022, including wins over Greene County, Saydel, Earlham and sweeping South Hamilton. The Mustangs will be looking for a third scorer to step up in the postseason behind Carson Vandelune and Durant Van Dyke. Coach Fred Lorenson says that despite Chariton’s record, he’s not dismissing this first round playoff matchup.
“Well, they struggled a little bit this year. They don’t have good size, we do have good size so we will hope to take advantage of that. They do have a couple of good scorers, one especially has scored a lot of points for them, who is a 5’7” guard. He shoots the ball really well and he is a good all-around player. We’ll have to play well defensively and make some shots and do a good job on the offensive end as well.”
The playoff game at PCM High School gets underway at 8:00 PM. The game will be broadcast on 92.1 KRLS with Alex Koch on the call.
