Indianola Jazz 1 traveled to Sioux City and competed in the Morningside Jazz Festival on Friday, placing first out of 14 class 4A bands from across Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
Earning solo honors included Soren Christensen on guitar, Sam Burns for trumpet, Zane Kolosik on alto sax, Sam Thessen on alto sax, and Kaylea Kumm on flugelhorn. Zane Kolosik was also named as the overall outstanding soloist for class 4A.
The Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 bands also competed at the SE Polk JazzFest on Saturday. Jazz 1 earned a 2nd place finish in class 4A, with the saxophone section receiving outstanding section honors. Members who earned individual honors included Zach Anderson for baritone saxophone, Sam Burns on trumpet, Kael Christensen for trombone, Kaylee Kumm on flugelhorn, Zane Kolosik on alto sax, Soren Christensen on guitar, Sam Thessen on alto sax, Anna Cort on vibes, Nathan Barth for tenor sax, and Cannon Roberson for drums.
Jazz 2 placed fifth out of eight in the 2nd Bands section, with Riley Morris for bari sax, Kyle Roberson on guitar, Jakob Kjellberg for tenor sax, Roger Cambron for alto sax, and Keegan Tilley on trombone.
The bands will next compete at Indianola High School this weekend for the Indianola Show Jazz Encounter on Friday and Saturday.
