Day one of the State Wrestling Tournament is in the books and it was a mixed bag for area wrestlers. In class 2A two of the four grapplers survived the first day of competition at Knoxville’s Marco Alejo won his consolation match over Levi Kramer of Clarion-Goldfield 14-4 to stay alive in the consolation round as did Knoxville’s Luke Spaur at 132 pounds as he defeated Easton O’Brien of Atlantic/CAM 9-6 to keep his state meet going. Eliminated from competition were Knoxville’s Wayne Johnston at 182 pounds after going 0-2 and PCM’s Kaden Clark at 285 pounds also was eliminated after losing twice. In class 3A, Pella’s Jackson Van Kley staved off elimination by winning a consolation match after losing his first round bout. All of Indianola’s wrestlers were able to stay alive for day two including Bowen Downey, Ryder Downey, and Walker Whalen, who all won their first round matches and will wrestle in quarterfinals today. Norwalk also had a successful day as Donovan Card, Hunter Blomgren, and Maddux Borcherding-Johnson all advanced to the quarterfinals. In class 1A Pleasantville will have two wrestlers still competing today as Caleb Cook, Kitt Lundy, Dillen Ammons all lost their first round matches with Lundy and Cook surviving consolation bouts. Day two begins at 9:00 with the class 2A and 3A quarterfinals, followed by the class 1A quarterfinals and 2A semi-finals at 2:30 with the 3A and 1A semi-finals at 7:30.
