The Pella School Board received a report on the change process for K-6 behavioral support positions at their meeting this week. Superintendent Greg Ebeling says the district underwent a self-study to determine how the current system supports students who may have behavior challenges and what they could do to improve assistance for teachers and administrators. Ebeling says the process includes adding elementary student success coordinators and K-6 dean of students, who will all focus on enhancing social-emotional learning and become point people to assist principals with students who may need help developing ways to deal with negative behavior. The district will soon undergo a hiring process for the new positions, and if all are external candidates, it would cost the schools up to an additional $300,000 per year.
