NorthStar Elementary fifth grade students were honored Tuesday by the Knoxville American Legion for their essay writing skills. Kurt Froyen from the American Legion tells KNIA/KRLS News about the contest.

“Each school sends one essay to their district and then one is selected from the district to be sent to the state.  There are six districts, Knoxville is in district six and we have about 75 schools in our district. From our school, Noa Bauer finished second in the district.”

Students Sara Bainey and Kolten Garrison tell KNIA/KRLS what the American flag means to them.

“The American Flag means a lot to me. You see it everywhere and it means so much.”

“   The American flag I think represents freedom and I think it represents the freedom of the people in our country.”

Two students from each of the five Fifth grade classes received a certificate, an American Flag, and an out-of-circulation Fort McHenry quarter. The students being honored were Zoie Swayne, Peighton Stuart, Averie Staton, Clara Shaw, Sophie Miller, Sabrie Mai, Grayson Jenkins, Kolten Garrison, Mia Durham, and Noa Bauer.
