The Central College softball team is in Columbus, Georgia today to open play in the NFCA Leadoff Classic.

This prestigious event features 24 of the top division three softball teams in the country, and the Dutch will play two games each today, tomorrow and Sunday to start their 2022 season. Coach George Wares says it’s a mix of nervousness and excitement as he embarks on his 38th season at the helm.

“You play Alma and you know that Alma is always good. You play Randolf-Macon and you know they’re always good. Our players are excited because we play Virginia Wesleyan and they’re the defending national champion. But every year is different and you’re not sure what version of those other teams you’re going to see and who they’re going to be pitching against you. We’re excited about it and we’re hoping we can perform well. Whatever it is, we’ll take it and then try to build off of that.”

Today’s games against Alma of Michigan and Randolph-Macon of Virginia are scheduled for 2:30 and 4:30 Iowa time and can be heard live on the KRLS3 stream at www.kniakrls.com.
