While some key returning state qualifiers weren’t in action and with far fewer events than an outdoor meet, the Pella boys track and field team still showed flashes of why they just might be the favorite to repeat as 3A champions at the Iowa Track and Field Association Indoor State Meet in Ames Friday.
The Dutch placed 2nd within a field mixed with some of the top returning teams in Class 3A, including North Polk — who ran away in victory, as well as Carlisle, Dallas Center-Grimes, and ADM, who rounded out the top five yesterday and were all in the top 7 or better in 2021 at Drake Stadium.
Pella racked up 54 points in just four events, doubling up as champion and runner up in the 800 meters (Chase Lauman, Josiah Wittenberg) and going 1st-3rd in the 60 meter hurdles (Gage Huyser, Nolan Clayberg). The Dutch also placed 1st in the 4×60 Shuttle Hurdle Relay (Clayberg, Luke Fairchild, Cor Huyser, Gage Huyser) and 4×800 relay (Josiah Wittenberg, Trey Van Hauen, Wyatt Van Dyke, Chase Lauman).
