The Iowa legislature continues its work at the Statehouse. Representative Jon Thorup spoke with KNIA/KRLS News about what has been the focus this past week.
“Over the last week, we have had what we call “noncon” or noncontroversial bills that are always bi-partisan. I am guessing we had about 30 of those bills. Most of what last week was absorbed by was what I’m calling the “Frankenstein bill;” it has four big chunks to it. Some of the parts relate to each other but some of them don’t. It has been an example of all the worst in legislating in my opinion. It’s absorbing a lot of time and it doesn’t have the votes to pass.”
Thorup describes what the bill is about.
“Last year we had three bills, one was on medical malpractice, one was on commercial motor vehicle malpractice, and one was on changing the unemployment system. The three bills did not have enough votes to pass so somebody decided to put them into one big bill and last week a medical freedom portion was added to it. So there are four large topics all in one major bill which is very common in Washington but it’s something we don’t like to do at the state level most of the time we like to have one bill be one topic. This bill will probably take a lot of our time next week too.”
