Eagles Boys Soccer Shines in Season Opening Win over PCM

The Pella Christian boys soccer team opened their season Thursday knocking off PCM 4-1.

The Eagles got off to a hot start to their season as freshman Theo Hugen found the net early in the first half to score his first varsity goal. The Mustangs would come back minutes later to tie the game and score their lone goal of the night on a corner kick. The Eagles would control possession for most of the half, with Hugen netting two more goals and Junior Jack Fancher scoring on a free kick with just 30 seconds left in the half. Head Coach Jake Fancher said he was impressed with his team’s passing ability in the win.

“I was telling the guys, I think we connected more passes in this game than we had all of last year. We were really controlling the ball, looking to pass, seeing the open teammate, and making the right decisions which is promising.”

Pella Christian is now 1-0 on the season, while PCM fell to 1-1. The Eagles return to action on Monday as they host Albia, while the Mustangs next game is Thursday April 7th hosting Chariton.

Eagles Struggle in Home Opener Loss to Norwalk

In the back half of the soccer doubleheader on Eagle Lane, the Norwalk girls soccer team gained control of the match early on to down Pella Christian 8-0.

The Warriors scored three goals in the first half and Pella Christian couldn’t flip the script in the second half, as Norwalk would add five more goals. The Warriors were well rounded in their scoring efforts as seven different players scored their eight goals on the night. Norwalk Head Coach Andrew Messer said that it took a while for his team to get going, but was happy to see them settle in.

“You know, we came out and it was cold. We were slow a little bit, but we were finally able to settle down a little bit and stop taking shots that were forced upon us and we settled into our shots.”

Despite the loss, Eagles Head Coach Mike Buchheit was proud of his team’s effort.

“We’ve got a lot of girls that haven’t played a lot of soccer that played a lot of key positions tonight, that have a lot of athletic ability and I’m just pleased with how hard the girls competed tonight. So, looking forward to seeing how the pieces keep coming together over the course of the season.”

Norwalk improved to 2-0 on the season with the win, while Pella Christian fell to 1-1. The Warriors are back in action tonight at 7:00 p.m. as they travel to Bondurant-Farrar. The Eagles next game is on Thursday April 7th when they host Centerville.
