A pair of Drake Relays entries and a meet victory for the defending 3A track and field champions highlighted the first outdoor meet of the spring season for Pella Saturday at the DCG Mustang Classic.
Pella’s boys edged Dowling for the team title with 140 team points. Gage Huyser broke a school record and the Drake Relays Blue Standard in the 110 Hurdles (14.87) in a 2nd place finish, and won the 400 meter hurdles and was part of the championship Shuttle Hurdle Relay with Nolan Clayberg, Luke Fairchild, and Cor Huyser. Pella also won the following events: High Jump: Parker Elder – 5’10”, 400m: Karl Miller – 52.10, and 800m: Chase Lauman – 2:00.29.
The Dutch girls were led by a blue standard 4×200 relay, including Delanie Reynolds, Calla Kerndt, Emily McMartin, Jacie Trine, who won that event with a time of 1:46.94. The girls placed 7th in a field loaded with five 4A schools and the hosting Mustangs. Other key finishes for the Pella girls included:
Sprint Medley Relay: 2nd, 1:54.20 – Delanie Reynolds, Emily McMartin, Calla Kerndt, Jacie Trine
3000m: 3rd, 11:19.10 – Raegan Snieder
200m: 2nd, Trine – 26.73
Pella’s girls are next in action at Waukee Northwest on Tuesday; the Dutch boys will split their large team into meets at Southeast Polk and Oskaloosa Thursday.
