A version of the what is called the public school transparency bill passed through the Iowa House recently. State Representative Jon Thorup spoke with KNIA/KRLS News about the bill.

“The transparency bill that came through the House I did vote for. I was reluctant at first until I was shown some examples of things being used at schools. Some schools in Iowa provided some pretty disturbing stuff. I’m not a person that blushes easily and I was handed some things that were provided in schools and thought this is not good, nd should not be in schools.”

Thorup talks about if there is a way to revise what has been passed to make the process easier.

“I think so. One thing you have to remember is this has passed the House it would still need to pass through the Senate and be signed by the Governor. The Senate has sent over a different version, in some ways it is better and in some ways I think that it’s worse. The Senate version includes the vouchers so that is a non-starter for some of us in the House. In the version, we did pass and we tried to include things that teachers and administrators are doing anyway. We are trying to make this as seamless a transition as we can.”

The House passed their version of the bill on a 60-35 vote.
