Pella Boys Golf Opens Three-Meet LHC Competition in Lead
A tradition started last year continued in 2022 as the spring golf teams of the Little Hawkeye Conference competed against each other in the first of a three meet series in Grinnell. Pella took the early 18-hole lead, shooting 320, while Pella Christian had one of their best meets in recent years with their young team, shooting 337. Pella was paced by Will Simpson at 75, who is in 2nd place in the individual standings, and Ayden Gordon’s 79, and he is in 4th after the first 18 holes. Thomas Tangen at 82 and Cade McGinley at 84 rounded out a strong scoring day for the Dutch. There are two more tournaments later this spring to determine the regular season LHC champions. Pella is next in action at their home Master’s invitational Friday and Saturday.

Pella Soccer Teams Split with Norwalk
It was comeback win at home for the #6 in 2A Pella boys soccer team 2-1 against Norwalk, while the #12 Dutch girls couldn’t score but played excellent defense against the #1 in 2A Warriors in a 1-0 loss on the road.
In the boys contest, Head Coach Mark Solomon says Pella came out very timid and, with the wind against them, Norwalk dominated much of the early possession, as an unfortunate miscommunication on defense led to a turnover, and a Warrior shot right in front of goal, giving the Warriors a 1-0 advantage only 7 minutes into the game. With 12 minutes remaining in the game, a Pella corner kick that bounced around the box, and Camden Bryngelson knocked the ball in the goal to tie the game at 1-1. That seemed to be the spark Pella needed, as only 3 minutes later, a cross from Isaac Semini found Logan Solomon inside the 18yd area, and he buried a second goal to make it 2-1 Pella. The Dutch played hard defense for the final 8 minutes of the game and held on for the win. Pella remains undefeated in boys soccer and will host #11 Carlisle Friday.
Haley Van Houweling had 14 saves against what has been one of the top offensive teams in Iowa. Head Coach Mark Howard says Abby Warner had a good scoring chance from the left side ricocheting off of the top bar in the first half. Pella falls to 4-1 and take on #8 Carlisle at home Thursday, with defending State champions and #7 ranked Waverly-Shell Rock looming Saturday for the annual Alumni Game, where all former Pella Girls’ Soccer Alumni get in free and get a group picture with the current team after the game.
