Pella Christian Girls Soccer Outlasts Grinnell, While Boys Soccer Can’t Shake Losing Streak

The Eagles girls soccer team hosted a nailbiter Tuesday night as they pulled out a 1-0 Little Hawkeye Conference win against Grinnell, while the boys soccer team fell 5-2 at Grinnell.

The girls soccer match was even for most of the night, with both teams putting six shots on goal in the first half but neither team was able to find the net before halftime. The second half was equally as even until late in the period. With under 10 minutes left in regulation, Sarah Gritters found Marina DeCampo who netted her first career goal to give Pella Christian the narrow victory. Junior forward Joslyn Terpstra said that a win of this nature shows the growth of the team.

“It just gives us a lot of confidence. And matching the number of conference wins we had last year, we only had one, and we already have one this year so I think that shows a lot of growth.”

The Eagles girls soccer team improved to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. They will look to build momentum off the big conference win against Chariton on Thursday.

The Pella Christian boys soccer team fell behind 2-0 in the first half before Jack Fancher tied the match with a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes of the period. Fancher scored his first goal on a free kick from about 30 yards out, then netted a penalty kick. Despite grabbing the momentum before halftime, the Eagles wouldn’t be able to capitalize as Grinnell scored three times in the second half to extend Pella Christian’s losing streak to four. The Eagles boys soccer team’s record fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. They will look to get back on track Tuesday when they host Dallas Center-Grimes.
