The Pella Christian golf team battled the elements Monday at the PCM Mustang Invitational in Monroe and came away with a 4th place finish with a team score of 349.
The Eagles struggled to get acclimated to the near freezing temperatures and gusty winds on the front nine holes of the meet, but steadily improved throughout the back nine. Isaiah Breems carded a 36 on the back nine, to give him an overall score of 82 on the day. Eliot Menninga and Cooper Spronk each shot an 88 Monday, while Landon Fransman stepped into the varsity lineup due to an illness and carded a 91. Kyle Gao and Deacon Branderhorst rounded out the varsity for the Eagles yesterday with a 96 and 97 respectively. Prior to this busy stretch for Pella Christian golf, Head Coach Joel Rietema knew his club needed to prepare for less-than-ideal forecasts.
“It was again unfavorable. It was cold and windy. But one of those days I just said, hey, we gotta get out into the cold and the wind and play even though they don’t like to play in that. Sometimes that’s what you’re given in a tournament and you gotta be prepared for that.”
The Eagles have a quick turnaround as they return to the course today at the Oskaloosa Invitational at the Edmundson Golf Course beginning at 1 p.m.
In addition to the golf team being in action on Tuesday, Pella Christian has four other spring sports teams in action today. The boys tennis team hosts Chariton at 3:45 p.m., while the girls tennis team travels to Indianola at 4:15 p.m. Finishing the night for the Eagles is the boys and girls soccer teams taking on Dallas Center-Grimes at 5:30 p.m.
