While windy conditions may it feel like the middle of March than the last day of April, the Knoxville Raceway was able to get in its first complete night of racing on Saturday as heard on KNIA. Tyler Groenendyk picked up where he left off last year when he won the Pro Sprints title by winning the A-Main. Unlike last season, Groenendyk led the final four laps to take the win. After several restarts and red flags, Terry McCarl emerged from the shrapnel to take the 360 checkered flag. McCarl is running in the 360s this season to avoid racing against his sons, Austin and Carson in the 410 class. McCarl started on the front row and led all 18 laps to get his ninth career 360 win at Knoxville. In the 410s, Brian Brown, who has not had a great start to his season of racing, came back home to Knoxville and blew by Matt Juhl on a restart and was never challenged. Brown won his 57th career 410 race at Knoxville tying him with 12-time Knoxville Nationals Winner Steve Kinser on the all-time list. He told KNIA/KRLS Sports to be tied with one of the biggest legends in racing is an honor.
Brown: “It’s unbelievable, to be able to tie Kinser is unbelievable even if its a foot race. We weren’t real good early but we won the heat and won the feature.”
Brown had to endure several restarts and even a fuel stop before picking up the win. More racing action is next week as the Pro Sprints will have two features with their make up of last week’s rain out.
