Pella Christian Boys Golf Finishes 5th at Grinnell Invite
The Pella Christian golf team managed a fifth place at the Grinnell Invite Monday, just as the rain rolled at the end of the meet.
For the first time this season the Eagles had 5 athletes end the day in the 80’s. Freshman Eliot Menninga shot an 83, while sophomores Isaiah Breems and Dane Geetings both turned in 85’s. Also finishing in the 80’s was freshman Deacon Branderhorst and senior Kyle Gao, as they each shot an 86 on the afternoon. Just missing out on a score in the 80’s and rounding out the lineup for Pella Christian was freshman Cooper Spronk, who carded a 91. The Eagles have been playing some of their best golf as of late, but despite this Head Coach Joel Rietema isn’t applying any extra pressure to his team.
“As it warms up and they get some more rounds under their belt and more competitions especially for these younger guys, I would expect scores to go lower and lower. But it’s really nice to have guys that really do enjoy the game of golf, just playing it and not necessarily getting all the medals or all the accolades and that kind of stuff, but maybe that stuff is coming.”
The Eagles boys golf team is back on the course today for the third and final day of the Little Hawkeye Conference regular season meet at Bos Landen Golf Club beginning at 1 p.m.
Eagles Boys Soccer Wins Third Straight, Girls Soccer Falls in Tough Fashion
The Pella Christian boys soccer team picked up their third straight win Monday with a 3-0 victory over Collins-Maxwell, while the girls soccer squad lost 1-0 against Knoxville.
Traveling to West Marshall for their match against Collins-Maxwell, the Eagles boys soccer team took advantage of two first half goals en route to keeping their winning streak alive. Ethan Van Arendonk netted his second goal of the season in the first half off of a rebound, and Aiden Stoltz buried his first goal of the year from the right side of the box. Theo Hugen then scored the Eagles final goal of the night in the first minute of the second half, while goalkeeper Keagan Fopma had his first shutout of the season.
For the Pella Christian girls soccer team, it was a tough loss to swallow Monday. Despite holding an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal on the night and holding Knoxville scoreless for 56 minutes, a handball in the box gave the road Panthers squad a penalty kick in the 57th minute. Knoxville would convert the penalty kick and hold on for the final 23 minutes to down the Eagles.
With their win, the Pella Christian boys soccer squad’s record improved to 5-5 on the year, while the Eagles girls soccer team saw their record slip to 3-5 this spring. Both soccer teams return to the pitch today to take on Newton at 5:30 pm. The girls will welcome the Cardinals to Eagle Lane, while the boys travel to Newton for their match.
