The Bluegrass Conference Track and Field Meet is today and the Twin Cedars girls are looking to win it again after taking the title last year while Melcher-Dallas is trying to bring home several individual goals medals. The Sabers have several chances to score a lot of points tonight. Rylee Dunkin is ranked number one in three events, the 800, 1500 and long jump which she has taken home gold in each event at least once this season. The Sabers are also tops in the BGC in three relays, the 800 medley, 1600 medley and the shuttle hurdle relay. Coach Cam Parker says his only concern is he has two less girls than last season on the team and that could make it tough to repeat, but he will see if he can get the right girls into their strongest events.
Parker “I think we’ll be very competitive in every event we run in. We’ve had to have several events empty in meets this season and that’s a killer in points, but I’m going to max out everyone in four events this time and see if I can push the right buttons to get us the win.”
Parker adds in events they do not win, his team needs to get a top three or four to gain points and steal points away from other teams. Meanwhile for the Melcher-Dallas boys, Coach John Suntken’s small but eager Saints are looking for some individual gold and coming out of the PCM Invitational last week he thinks several events are there for the taking.
Suntken “I want Logan to win the high jump, which he can, we have a shot to win. We have a shot to win the 110 highs, a shot to win the shuttle hurdle relay and we have a shot to place pretty good in other relays.”
Logan Godfrey has the top high jump of six feet and Suntken says he may have to go six/two tonight for a chance to win. Owen Suntken has the top time going in for the 110 high hurdles at :16.22, and the Saints have the top seed in the shuttle hurdle relay tonight with a time of 1:11.33. For the girls, Coach Amy Stuart is confident that the field events can score points, and is hoping a few more events can get some medals as well.
Stuart: “Our relays distance med, 4×2 and 4×1 we have a shot to finish well in those events. Kianna Jackson has taken up running the 1500 and 3000 and she has a shot to place in the top six if she can maintain her time.”
Gabby Overgaard has the top seed in the discus and is the third seed in the shot put behind teammate BrieAnna Remster, while freshman Saydi Benz has a shot at a top three in the long jump. The Saints are also a top three seed in most relays. Action at the Bluegrass Conference meet gets underway today at 4:30 at Lamoni.
