The Des Moines Metro Opera is holding a panel discussion with Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Naomi André, director Tazewell Thompson, and conductor Michael Ellis Ingram about the upcoming production of Porgy and Bess. During this event, the panelists will share their perspectives on the celebrated opera and discuss why it has been both beloved and challenged since its premiere in 1935. Other topics will include cultural representation and the marginalization of Black communities. In addition, the panel will provide perspective about the role of Porgy and Bess today, and how it might assist the opera community in its efforts to make the art-form more inclusive. The event is on June 2nd and is free to the public. Find a link to register below.
