While the team was a few points away from its ultimate goal, the 2022 state track and field meet was still special for the Dutch of Pella. Of the 19 total events, Pella qualified for all of them and earned a medal in 15 of them.

One group’s journey concluded at the top, as the Shuttle Hurdle Relay of Nolan Clayberg, Reece Thoreson, Luke Fairchild, and Gage Huyser ran the relay event in 59.45 seconds to win the state championship Saturday, breaking a Class 3A state meet record in the process.

The trio of Clayberg, Thoreson, and Huyser–who graduated at Drake Stadium Friday night, were part of the same event as 8th graders, and narrowly missed a team championship and record in 2021.
