Beau Leisure threw a 15 strikeout two hit gem and the Knoxville Baseball Squad got one of its biggest wins in recent memory with a 2-0 win over Pella, giving the Dutch their first loss of the season as heard live on KNIA and KRLS. The game’s first three innings was a pitching stalemate between Leisure and Pella starter Keegan Hansen as both teams combined for just three baserunners with Pella owning all three. But the Panthers broke through in the 4th with two runs when Luke Spaur bunted safely followed by Trenton Kingery ripping an RBI triple followed by a couple batters later by Dakota Ramsey’s RBI single to make the score 2-0. Leisure did the rest, striking out the side in the 5th and recording the final of his 15 Ks for the game’s final out.
Knoxville Coach Turner Devore told KNIA/KRLS Sports Spaur’s bunt started to put pressure on Pella to force them to make plays.
Devore: “We wanted to put pressure on them, and Luke had a decent bunt and with this thick grass the ball is going to really slow down, so it was a good start to that inning, for sure.”
Pella Coach Jesse Jablonski told KNIA/KRLS Sports at the plate discipline was what he was most disappointed with the most.
Jablonski: “We struggled to make adjustments at the plate. We didn’t shorten swings, did catch up to the velocity, and didn’t catch up to his pitches. We were not disciplined at pitched above our hands, and we also gave up two hits on sac bunts.”
Hansen took the loss going five innings allowing two runs on three hits and striking out seven. Knoxville is now 5-2 and will be off until a road game Thursday at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont while Pella is 6-1 and comes back Tuesday against Gilbert.
