The Pella Christian baseball and softball teams went on the road Friday night and dominated rival Des Moines Christian. The Eagles softball squad cruised to a 17-2 victory, while the baseball team tamed the Lions in a 15-2 win.
The Pella Christian softball team grabbed the upper hand right away as the first two batter of the game in Emri Agre and Faith Kacmarynski scored. A five-run second inning gave the Eagles all the cushion they would need to grab the win, but they wouldn’t stop there. After adding three runs between the fifth and sixth innings, the Eagles exploded for another big inning scoring seven times in the final frame. Talking about the offensive dominance of her squad, Pella Christian Head Coach Karen Harrill said she was proud of the full team effort.
“We actually were able to put some of the JV kids in just to get an at-bat, and they hit really well. So that’s where we kind of ran up the score and unintentionally because I wanted to just get the kids some hits, and they came through, they came through. So I’m proud of them all. But yeah, it makes me, it makes me happy. Every game won’t be like that, you know, it’s not going to be like that all the time. But when we get one like this, that’s what I want. It’s just fun.”
On the baseball diamond, catcher Corbin Westerkamp highlighted a big night for the Eagles. The Pella Christian backstop crushed a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning, before hitting a two-RBI triple in the seventh inning. In addition to Westerkamp’s five RBIs, Lincoln Vander Molen batted in four runs, while Bennett Spronk and Caleb Belzer each had two. Micah DeHaan picked up the win on the mound, his second of the season. The senior threw five innings, surrendering just three hits, three walks, two earned runs while striking out eight Lions batters.
The Pella Christian Softball team evened their record to 1-1 and won’t have to wait long to try and get over .500, as they travel for a tournament at Williamsburg this morning at 9 a.m. The Eagles baseball squad maintained their perfect start to the season, improving to 3-0 with the win. They will look to remain unbeaten on Tuesday when they host Albia.
