A Pella singles player and doubles duo from Norwalk are 2-1 after day one of the State Singles and Doubles Tennis Tournament, while a Knoxville duo had their great careers end.

Emily Blom won her first match against Allison Pavlovec (6-2, 6-3), but dropped her second to #3 seed Ella Tallett of Xavier (1-6, 2-6). She’s playing in the 5th place bracket today in a rematch with Mary Rolfstad of Assumption — that’s the lone win Pella picked up in last Saturday’s team state quarterfinals match. Blom defeated Elise Davison of Camanche (6-2, 6-3) to keep her season going.

Knoxville’s Olivia Maasdam and Jayden Streigle dropped their first match to #1 seeded Ally Burger and Courtney Carstensen of Xavier in the doubles bracket. They bounced back with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Libby Janssen and Adria Neymeyer of Aplington-Parkersburg in the first consolation match, only to fall by a tiebreaking third set against Presley Blommers and Lucy Roach (2-6, 7-6, 7-9).

Norwalk Sisters Ava and Olivia Johnson were defeated in their opener by Katelynn Kock and Kathryn Zylstra of Cedar Rapids Washington (0-6, 1-6) but won two consolation matches for a chance at 5th place, defeating Prairie’s Grace Hobson and Lydia Welch (6-4, 6-4) and Tori Johnson and Anna Schmitz of Ankeny. The Johnson sisters open against Allie Christensen and Dash Svitashev of Johnston.
